(Rockingham County, NC) – Rockingham County Schools announces the implementation of cutting-edge weapons detection systems across middle and high schools in the district. The OPENGATE systems, renowned for their reliability and accuracy, are manufactured by CEIA, a global leader in security screening solutions. CEIA’s commitment to innovation and excellence has made them the preferred choice for security professionals worldwide, including major airports, government buildings, concert & performance venues and educational institutions.
The addition of the CEIA OPENGATE systems enhances Rockingham County Schools’ existing safety protocols, providing an additional layer of security to protect students, staff and visitors. The decision to invest in these systems reflects the district’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment for all.
Director of School Safety Sean Gladieux emphasized the importance of implementing weapons detection systems, stating, “In today’s world, ensuring the safety and security of our schools and our school families is paramount. The addition of weapons detection systems is a proactive measure to enhance our district safety protocols and protect our students, staff, spectators and visitors.”
J.E. Holmes Middle School was the first school in the district to utilize the OPENGATE on April 8th receiving overwhelming support from our staff, students and families. High Schools began using the weapons detection systems at athletic contests recently. All middle and high schools will have this safety equipment in place on the first day of school, August 26th and at all school activities and events. In addition to school safety, weapons detection will further compliment Rockingham County School’s clear bag policy at athletic events which was initiated in 2023.
The implementation of weapons detection systems is part of Rockingham County Schools’ comprehensive approach to safety and security. By incorporating multiple layers of security measures, including surveillance cameras, safety vestibules, vape detectors, visitor management systems, staff training and weapons detection, the Rockingham County Schools is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for everyone.
The purchase of the CEIA OPENGATE systems were made possible through a combination of restricted sales tax revenue and the Center for Safer Schools Grant. These two funding sources will allow Rockingham County Schools to equip all middle schools and high schools with state-of-the-art security technology at a cost of approximately $475,000.
