Rockingham County Government News Release • November 25, 2024 • D. Crews, PIO
Wentworth, NC – As Thanksgiving approaches, the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to remind residents to serve meals, safely, this holiday season.
For many, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the busy holiday season. With large family gatherings and cooking traditions, it’s important to stay mindful of fire safety while preparing meals.
“Cooking fires are preventable,” said Fire Marshal Melissa Joyce. “By staying focused in the kitchen, using a timer, and minimizing distractions like electronics or the TV, families can reduce their risk and keep the holiday celebrations safe.”
The Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office offers these simple safety tips to help ensure a safe Thanksgiving:
- Avoid Turkey Fryers Using Oil: Turkey fryers that require large amounts of hot oil can be dangerous, leading to severe burns and fires. If you want a fried turkey, consider purchasing one from a grocery store or restaurant, or choose a fryer that doesn’t use oil.
- Consider Safe Alternatives: Infrared fryers, air fryers, or electric turkey fryers, that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory, are encouraged in place of propane fryers.
- Never Leave Cooking Unattended: Stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling. If you must step away, even for a moment, turn off the stove.
- Monitor Cooking Food: If simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly. Stay in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you when to check on your dishes.
- Keep Fire-Fighting Tools Handy: Always have an oven mitt and a pan lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts, cover the pan with the lid to smother the flame. Turn off the burner and leave the pan covered until it cools.
- Create a Kid-Free Zone: Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove and any hot surfaces where food or beverages are prepared.
