Mrs. Shirdean Cummings Ellington departed this life on Sunday morning, January 7, 2024.
As a native and lifelong resident of Rockingham County, North Carolina, she attended the local public schools and was a former employee of Unifi Corporation. Prior to the onset of infirmities, she was an active member of Wentworth Baptist Church where she served with the Board of Ushers, Pastor’s Aid, Culinary Committee and the Senior Choir. During her leisure, she enjoyed fishing and gardening. She was an avid sports person with a penchant for softball and her favorite football team was the San Franciso Forty-Niners.
Her parents, Savannah Neal Cummings and William Henry Cummings; beloved husband, James Ellington; brothers, Ricky Clay Cummings and Clyde Cummings, preceded her in death.
Survivors are: loving children, Ronnie “Bread” Cummings (Mae), William “Pig” Cummings (Donna), Sharon “Binki” Cummings, Darrell “Kojak” Harrison, Rita Ellington, James Ellington (Leanne) and Carl Ellington; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Jean Ramey; brothers, Min. Donald Cummings (Linda) and Eddie Lee Cummings (Linda); sister-in-law, Debbie Houghton (Larry); special friends, Maxine Thomas, Faye Thomas and Clarinda Mims; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2024 from the Wentworth Baptist Church, 773 NC 65 with Dr. Lester Boyd presiding. The family visitation will be Thursday from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Public viewing will be Wednesday afternoon at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street.
