Obituary: JONATHON “JOHN” THORNTON
























































Jonathon “John” Thornton passed away Friday night, February 2, 2024 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro following a sudden illness.

A memorial service will be held at 5 PM on Thursday, February 8th, at Colonial Funeral Home & Chapel. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

John was born March 6, 1973 in Mercer County, West Virginia. He worked in the textile industry for over 30 years. John was a long-time employee of Gildan Active Wear (formerly known as Frontier Spinning Mills) where he worked for 29 years.

“Johnny”, as he was referred to by his close family, was a die-hard WVU fan. He loved to spend time watching WVU football or basketball. He loved his family unconditionally. John enjoyed listening to music, watching movies and playing cards. To know John was to love him and he was definitely a person that never changed his character around his friends and family. He was nothing but genuine.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kimberly Thornton of the home, whom he leaves to cherish his memory; his children, Kayla Thornton of Madison, Lynn Dalton of Mayodan and Marcus Dalton (Yesenia) of Asheville; grandchildren who he loved dearly, Alysia Dalton, Ariana Dalton and Kylan Roberts; his mother, Linda Wade (David) of Collinsville, VA; brothers, Robert Thornton (Liz) of Mayodan and Darrell Thornton (Sara) of Eden; devoted friend, Brandon Foley (Sarah); additional brothers and sister, Lori “Ann” Younger, Yolanda Dalton, Tony Dalton, Andre Dalton and Chris Hairston; a host of nieces and nephews; along with his canine companions, Bentley and Oakley.

John was preceded in death by his father, Lonzo Thornton.
