Obituary: ELROY YOUNG

MR. ELROY YOUNG was born to the late Archie Young and Willie Mae Palmer Young on May 7, 1944, in Halifax County, North Carolina. He transitioned from this earthly life and entered his heavenly home on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Yanceyville Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Yanceyville, North Carolina.

During his early years, Elroy professed faith in Jesus Christ and became a member of the South Street Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina, and would play the drums for the choir on various occasions. He later attended the Roanoke Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina.

Elroy received his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System and graduated with the class of 1963 from the former McIver High School in Littleton, North Carolina, where he played the drums in the high school band. After graduation, he entered the United States Army and served his country as a sharpshooter until he was honorably discharged in 1966.

After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Elroy became employed with various businesses including Matt’s Auto Shop where he was a mechanic, and also at a local pharmacy where he delivered prescriptions to Brooklyn residents.

In 1966, Elroy was married to his lifetime friend, Brenza Manley. In this marriage, he became known as “Ace” and was also a very special brother-in-law to Shirley, “Cy”, and Donna Paige. He and his longtime friend, Luther Alston, shared such a special bond that both of them knew without a doubt they could always depend on each other regardless of what, when, or where the need.

When Elroy returned to his hometown of Littleton, North Carolina, he continued to be very devoted, supportive, loyal, and generous to his family and friends. He was a great man and a friend to so many. Also, “Mr. Elroy” could compete with the BEST when it came to Styling in his “Designer Suits” and “Sharp Hats”.

In addition to his parents, Elroy was preceded in death by his older sisters, Elizabeth Spencer and Dorothy Briggs; and his brother, Nelson Young.

Those remaining to treasure the memories of his life and to share the legacy of his devotion are his loving nieces who cared for him during his illness, Janice Vaughters (John) and Doris Harris (Terry) all of Baltimore, MD; his four godchildren: Shanetta Holder of Sumter, VA, Tampa Gaither of Brooklyn, NY, Cami Roberson of Argentina, and Matt Louis Taylor, Jr. of Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and especially the 1963 class of the McIver High School “Mustangs”.
