Cathy Ann Purdy Vernon, 69, passed away peacefully at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital on Sunday, October 8, 2023, surrounded by her husband and daughter.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Christ Free Will Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home in Madison and all other times at 621 Van Buren Road, Stoneville.
Cathy, a native of Rockingham County was the daughter of the late Taylor and Gladys Purdy of Stoneville and in-laws, G.W. and Jennie Vernon of Stoneville. She was a 1972 graduate of Madison Mayodan High School. Cathy was a sewing machine operator for many years in several sewing factories in the county before retiring from AC Furniture, where she handled a lot of the market sample sewing jobs for the furniture market.
Cathy was God fearing and a devout wife and mother. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, reading, puzzles, canning, poetry, writing stories and loving her pups. She loved the Lord and was an ordained minister and spoke many times at her home church, Christ Free Will Baptist Church in Stokesdale.
In addition to her parents and in-laws, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Fred Hicks; nephew, Taylor Purdy, Jr. and baby brother, James Purdy.
Survivors include her husband of forty-one years, George Franklin Vernon; daughter, Jennie Vernon (Chris Martin); brothers, Paul Purdy (Carrol) and Taylor Purdy (Phyllis); sisters, Pat Hicks and Sandra Plantz (Norman); sisters-in-law, Jeanette Dodson (James), Linda Knight (Bonnie) and Eleanor Patterson (Frankie); brother-in-law, Ronnie Vernon and many nieces and nephews.
