Obituary: BERTHA MARTIN McBRIDE

Bertha Martin McBride, 89, of Madison went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 12, 2022, at her home.

Bertha was born in Henry County, VA on September 15, 1932, to the late Albert and Virgie Hodge Martin. She graduated from Spencer Penn High School and was a longtime member of Dan Valley Baptist Church.

Bertha’s love for friends and family emulated through every aspect of her life. She tirelessly volunteered at her church where she was treasurer, Vacation Bible School director, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. Bertha loved working at both Fuzzy’s BBQ and Golden Skillet, serving members of her community and being a part of their everyday lives.

Bertha also showed her love through cooking in the kitchen. She was well known as a wonderful cook and used this talent to make those close to her feel special. She was the first person to bring a coconut pie or potato soup to someone in need and took pride in taking care of loved ones.

Her and Johnny built a life around their family. They were her pride and joy. Bertha loved being a mother, but being a Nana was her favorite. She kept a weekly tradition with Sunday lunch, as her family gathered together to share in fellowship and love each week.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny McBride; her sister, Ernestine Moore; her brother-in-law, William Moore; her brother, Hardy Martin; and her sister-in-law, Helen Martin.

Those left to carry her legacy are her children, Donna Carter of Mayodan and Barry McBride (Sherrie) of Sandy Ridge; her special friend, Wayne Carter; her grandchildren, Gini Cardwell (Josh), Kati Cardwell, and Heather McBride; and her great grandchildren, Brianna, Colton, Cardwell, and Henry.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022, at Dan Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Roberts and Rev. Larry Easler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will hold visitation on Sunday evening, August 14, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Ray Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Bertha’s home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.

Ray Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Bertha McBride, and all are invited to share memories and offer condolences at www.rayfuneralhome.com.
