On June 1, we lost one of God’s most vibrant and faithful spirits when Anne Moore Talley passed away peacefully at Wesley Long Hospital. She was a mother to four children, a grandmother to 13, and a great-grandmother to 27. She loved her church, family, friends and the UNC Tarheels with all her heart, and she was dearly loved in return.
Anne was born on December 9, 1929 in Reidsville, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Dr. Jess Moore and Minnie Lambeth Moore, and she remained devoted to her parents and cared for them throughout their lives. She and her parents were faithful members of the First Methodist Church of Reidsville, where her father was a charter member.
Anne moved to Charlotte, NC in 1959, where she worked for 13 years as a medical transcriptionist at Charlotte Memorial Hospital while raising her children. These were often difficult years as she juggled many responsibilities, but she never lost sight of what was important. She protected her children and made sure they attended church faithfully and understood right and wrong. Her greatest legacy is the strong faith instilled in each of them which they, in turn, have passed on to their own children.
Anne moved back to Reidsville in 1976 and continued her career as a transcriptionist at Wesley Long Hospital for another 13 years. In addition to caring for her mother through Minnie’s final days, she was an active member and Sunday school teacher at First Methodist, and she developed close friendships with people all over the community. When First Methodist disbanded, she became an active member of the First Baptist Church in Reidsville, where she continued to study the Bible and also served as a prayer leader and volunteer for as long as she was able.
In recent years, Anne became more limited physically, especially as her eyesight failed, but her spirit, memory and expansive love remained strong. Her family and friends relied on her advice, encouragement and prayers up until her final day on this earth. She also had a mischievous streak and was quick with a joke. When she was with others, she laughed with them, shared their sorrows and always, always prayed daily for those she loved and for a better world.
Anne is predeceased by her parents; her beloved brother, Jess Moore; and her precious grandchild, Ty Gifford.
She is survived by her children Robert (“Mo”) Talley (Jeanne) of Athens, Georgia; Wayne Talley of Roper, NC; Cindy Gifford (Arland) of Alfred, Maine; Kathy Grey (Chuck) of Norfolk, Virginia; all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Barbara Moore of Reidsville; her nephew John Moore (Terri) of Greensboro; her niece Mary Lambeth Moore (Bill Gowan) of Raleigh; her niece Carolyn Moore (David Moon) of Brentwood, New Hampshire; and two great nephews and one great niece.
The family would like to express deep gratitude to Anne’s devoted caregivers, Michelle Apple and Sharlene Benfield.
When Anne’s children were growing up, she faithfully took them to weekly church meetings of the Royal Ambassadors (RAs) and Girls’ Auxiliary (GAs). In recent years, these groups have often ministered to Anne. Thus, for those wishing to give in Anne’s memory, the family welcomes donations made to the First Baptist Church of Reidsville, including gifts designated for the RAs or GAs 409 S. Main St. Reidsville, NC 27320
