22-Year-Old Madison Man Killed In US-220 Crash

(Madison, NC) –  At 5:36 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, the State Highway Patrol responded to the report of a crash that occurred on US 220 near Payne Dairy Road in Rockingham County.
 
Julian Branson Prosser, Jr., 77, of Wake Forest, N.C., was traveling east from Payne Dairy Road onto US 220, operating a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado truck. Matthew Kane Steele, 33, of Madison, N.C., was traveling south on US 220, operating a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle. Prosser failed to yield to traffic traveling south on US 220, striking Steele.
 
Steele died on-scene.
 
Prosser was uninjured during the crash.
 
US 220 near Payne Dairy Road was closed for approximately three (3) hours during the investigation.
 
Prosser was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield.
 
Troopers cleared the scene at 7:33 p.m.
